Author's Comments

The classic shot from Red Rock Crossing is classic for a reason, and I will not pretend otherwise. You walk down from the parking area at Crescent Moon, the creek opens up in front of you, and the towers rise on the far bank with their reflection laid out in the still water like a second cathedral built upside down. Everyone photographs this. You should photograph this. The question is when. Late afternoon in October is the answer I keep arriving at. The low sun hits the west face of the formation and the sandstone goes from rust to something closer to ember, and Oak Creek runs slow enough in autumn that the reflection actually holds. In spring the runoff churns the water and the mirror breaks. In summer the light is too high and too flat until very late, and by then the crowds have not gone anywhere. October gives you angle and stillness at the same time. Arrive earlier than feels reasonable. The lot fills by mid-morning on weekends and the good positions along the creek bank are claimed by photographers who know exactly what they came for. Bring a polarizer and then experiment with taking it off, because some days the reflection is stronger without it. A wide lens will get you the postcard. A slightly longer lens will isolate the towers against the sky and give you something quieter. Stay through the blue hour. After the sun drops behind the ridge to the west, there is a window of maybe fifteen minutes where the rock holds warm light from the sky while the creek goes cool and silver beneath it. That is the photograph most people miss because they have already packed up and gone.
