An 1893 wooden powerhouse balanced on a rock outcrop above the Crystal River, one of the most photographed historic structures in Colorado. The mill sits at the end of a rough four-wheel-drive road from the marble-quarry town of Marble, with aspen slopes rising behind it. In late September the surrounding hillsides turn gold and the river runs low and clear.

Practical Tips
The road from Marble requires high clearance and four-wheel drive; jeep tours and rentals operate from town in season. Morning light reaches the mill's face before the canyon wall shades it. The mill is on private land, so photograph from the road and riverbank only.

Kebler Pass

A 10,000-foot gravel pass west of Crested Butte that runs through one of the largest aspen groves in North America. In late September the entire valley turns gold and orange beneath the Ruby Range and the twin summits of the Anthracite Range. Wide pullouts along the road give clean views of aspen slopes with mountain backdrops.

Aspen Highlands Bowl

A dramatic high-alpine bowl accessible by hiking a ridge from the top of the Loge Peak lift at Aspen Highlands resort. The bowl provides direct views across to the Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak, framed by steep avalanche paths. In winter, the boot-pack line of skiers traversing the ridge creates a striking compositional element.
